It is with a heavy heart that we share the belated news of Ricky’s passing last February. Ricky, the namesake of Ricky’s Ranch Senior Horse Sanctuary, was a special soul who left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His story is one of resilience, love, and the transformative power of a second chance.

R. I. P. Ricky

Ricky enjoyed his favorite thing one last time – the hose. As the cool water sprayed over him, his joy was palpable. He spent his final moments grazing on the lush grass, surrounded by the peace and tranquility that defined his life at the sanctuary. And then, he crossed the Rainbow Bridge, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire us all.

We were incredibly fortunate to have Ricky with us for his final three years. When he arrived at Ricky’s Ranch, he was a shadow of the magnificent horse he once was. Years of abuse and neglect had taken their toll, but here, he found sanctuary. No more riding, no more pain. Just days filled with love, care, and companionship with his herd members. Ricky thrived in this environment, and in turn, he helped us thrive too.

A Teacher and a Friend

Ricky was my first horse. He was more than just a resident of the sanctuary; he was a teacher and a friend. Through Ricky, I learned how to love these giant, gentle creatures. His patience, his resilience, and his capacity for forgiveness were humbling. He opened my eyes to the plight of senior horses – those often overlooked, yet deserving of so much more.
